The World Trade Organization (WTO) Internship Programme provides an opportunity for postgraduate students and recent graduates to acquire valuable experience in international trade and policy. The programme offers qualified candidates from WTO member and observer countries to work within the WTO Secretariat.

About the WTO Internship Programme
The Word Trade Organizations Internship Programme is designed for postgraduate and graduates students who want to learn how international trade policies are developed and implemented. Interns are posted to different divisions within the WTO Secretariat and make their contributions to research, policy analysis, and administrative tasks.
The internship will help participants to build professional experience at the same time gaining insight into the structure, operations, and policy work of the WTO. Interns also work together with experienced professionals who specialize in global trade regulation, economic analysis, communication, and organizational management.
Assignments are given to Interns to enhanced both academic knowledge and skills relevant to careers in international organizations, public policy, and global economic development.
Areas of Work for WTO Interns
As an Intern you will be attached to divisions based on your academic background, skills, and the needs of the organization.
The following are the areas where interns will work:
1. Trade Law
2. Economics
3. Statistics
4. Trade Policy
5. Languages
6. Administration
7. Information, Communication and External Relations.
8. Information Management
Internship Duration
The WTO Internship Programme will cover for a maximum period of six (6) months. During this time, interns participate in projects within their attached division while learning about international trade governance.
Within this duration participants will have enough time to acquire valuable experience and understand the work processes within the WTO Secretariat.
Internship Allowance and Expenses
Interns will receive a daily allowance of CHF 60. This will cover their expenses during the six months period, including weekends and holidays.
Candidates are to note that the WTO does not cover their travel expenses to and from Geneva. Interns are responsible for arranging and funding their own travel to Switzerland.
Medical health insurance is also compulsory in Switzerland, and interns must arrange their own insurance coverage before starting the programme.
WTO Internship Programme Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria to be able to apply for
WTO Internship Programme. Applicants must:
1. Be a national of a WTO member state or a country or customs territory currently negotiating accession to the WTO.
2. Have completed undergraduate studies in a relevant discipline such as economics, law, statistics, international relations, communications, or related fields
3. In addition, candidates must meet one of the following postgraduate conditions:
- Currently enrolled in a master’s degree programme and have completed at least one year of study.
- Have completed a master’s degree and be enrolled in a higher postgraduate programme such as a PhD.
- Have completed a postgraduate degree (Master’s or PhD) within the past two years at the time of selection.
- Applicants must also be at least 21 years old when the internship begins.
How to Apply for the WTO Internship Programme

The application portal will guide you on how to complete the application. You must create a profile and upload all the documents and information before submitting.
Once submitted, suitable candidates are added to a candidate roster that remains valid for one year. Interns are selected from this roster when internship opportunities become available.
Only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted by the organization.
The WTO Internship Programme accepts applications throughout the year. Applicant should be visiting the career portal available internship openings which require specialized qualifications or expertise.

Noted that participation in the WTO Internship Program does not guarantee employment with the WTO Secretariat.
Interns can also apply for external job vacancies available on the portal provided they meet the qualifications and requirements for a particular position.
