The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) Plc. was incorporated in 1993 and is owned by all licensed banks in Nigeria, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The organization began operations in June 1994 with the goal of promoting the country’s interbank payment and settlement system. Since then, NIBSS has developed modern and world class infrastructure to support seamless interbank payments and eliminate delays or bottlenecks associated with the inter-bank funds transfer and settlement of funds between financial institutions.

NIBSS also manages the Nigeria Automated Clearing System (NACS), a platform designed to enable the electronic clearing of cheques and other paper based financial instruments. The system supports electronic funds transfers, Automated Direct Credits, and Automated Direct Debits. Acting on the directive of the Bankers’ Committee, NIBSS has also implemented advanced technologies to operate the Nigeria Central Switch (NCS), which helps facilitate efficient transaction processing across the banking network.

Principal Objectives of NIBSS Plc.

NIBSS was created to achieve several key objectives within Nigeria’s financial system:

• To function as a service oriented organization that provides a platform for same day clearing and settlement of interbank payments and transfers.
• To initiate and develop the infrastructure required for automated processing and settlement of transactions between banks.
• To improve the efficiency of funds transfers across the banking sector while minimizing risks related to payment settlement, treasury management challenges, and delayed reconciliation processes.
• To develop and promote a nationwide integrated network that supports electronic or paperless funds transfers and the settlement of financial transactions across the country.
