Federal University of Health Sciences Enugu is a specialized health federal university that is owned and controlled by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is located in Enugu, a major state and city in the eastern part of Nigeria.
When the institution was known and established as a university in 2024, it had a long history of existence dating back to 1952 when the university was established as the Federal School of Dental Technology and Hygiene, which at that time was located in Lagos under British rule.
In 1978 the institution transitioned from being named Federal School of Dental Technology and Hygiene to Federal School of Dental Technology and Therapy in order to capture its goals of training more dentists. In 1982 the institution moved to Enugu.
In 2000, after the relocation of the institution to Enugu, it was incorporated by the Joint Admission Board (JAMB) and also accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in order to award National Diplomas and Higher National Diplomas (HND) in the institution.
In 2021 the institution was granted the power to award degree programs in the institution but only in affiliation with a university, which at that time was Federal University of Technology Owerri until 2024, when it was granted full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer degree-affiliated courses.
